In Sierra Leone, where I taught physics at
Kolenteen Secondary School, Bangura was the most common last name in my
village. Most of the kids in my school were Muslim (even the the school
was technically Catholic) and their families followed the common convention of
naming thier first-born son Mohamed. About 15 years before I taught there
the village had a local soccer player make it big whose named started with an
"S" and a very polular political leader from the area whose name also
started with an "S".
In one of my classes, out of 43 students
there were 17 named Mohamed S. Bangura.

You know class sizes are too big at the High
School when...
1. You have 5 Amandas
and
2. 4 Ashleys
and
3. 3 Sams (all female)
and

4. They are all in one class at the same
time.
Sadly, this is not a joke.
It's my Third Period class at the High
School. I have 44 students.
I've also created a new strategy to deal with the
problem of having one more student than desks in the room. The last
student to have added the class is the "floater." They don't have
an assigned seat. They take the seat of anyone who is absent on any
given day. Something like double booking at clinics.
