[Winona Online Democracy]
I just wanted to offer some observations from the perspective of a
WALC staff member. Despite the impression created by Jerome's
super-heated editorial, finding a new location for the ALC is not
really a secret conspiracy unleashed suddenly on an unsuspecting
public. As Bob Sebo points out, this has been out in the arena of
public discussion for at least a couple of years. The shortcomings of
the Big O location have been pretty well documented, but if there are
some of you who are unconvinced, let me know and I can provide plenty
of details. I'm not sure what Larry Laber was thinking of when he
said we should be able to teach in a tent. Maybe he was even drawing
an analogy to my classroom, where old autobody materials in the floor
soak up through the carpet every fall following the annual
deep-cleaning.
We are a small group of dedicated staff dealing with a challenging
student population, and none of us really want to be in the center of
a public controversy. Over the past couple of years, we have
weathered plenty of uncertainty about our eventual relocation. We
just want a facility and resources that allow us to do our job as
well as we know we can. Considering the lack of other viable
options, we are looking forward to the modest improvements offered by
this proposed new building. I hope those of you busy commenting on
our future location will try to bear that in mind. Thanks!
