I think that the railroad was not in Winona before the civil war. The line
that runs through Winona and is the subject of these discussions was the 2nd
rail line into Winona. As I heard the story, the C&NW had the 1st line that
came in along the river. (remember the C&NW depot that was located where
the building West of Ace Hardware and Sears was). When the Milwaukee Road
wanted to come into Winona, the C&NW did not wish to share its line, and
blocked the Milwaukee by City Council action.
The Milwaukee simply built its line West and South of the city boundaries.
Later the City expanded to the other side of the tracks. The date of the
building of the Milwaukee Road tracks is not something I know, but I doubt
it was before the civil war. I would like to hear of some source material
on this historical factotem.

Okay.

Depends. Read on.

Who says it won't? Mankato Ave. is the route for commercial trucks.

Cool. If you have your way, ambulances won't be able to cross the tracks
during one of the MANY trains that pass, and you can put a graveyard in
that city park for those who Died for the Railroad.
The rail shouldn't even be passing through Winona proper. Get behind
THAT! It could have run along Rt 61. Get behind the real problem, and
Good Luck with that idea; it makes too much sense. Considering how
much money the RR is getting, it's not unreasonable. to ask.
Now I am not jumping on the recent bandwagon concerning the
investment of foreign governments into USA companies, but was
not a British firm heavily invested in this project? Are they still?
