I am going to agree that "Mr. Daniels" article was a bit crude and inflammatory, but the language aside, he did make some fine points regarding looking the other way at illegal border crossings. Can anyone here name another industrialized nation that would allow such migrations?
This has nothing to do with discrimination against Mexicans/Latinos in our country, I am all for them being here if they got here the same way everyone else did...take your turn and wait in line. I am a citizen of this country and if I don't have my passport when I return from abroad...let me tell you, I would be sitting some long hard hours on a bench in a customs office...this false sense of entitlement regarding entering our country is disturbing at best. My great grandparents had to wait in line (some of ours even had their names changed for them as they entered!) why don't they?
If you want a real good argument as to why these crossings shouldn't be
tolerated( aside form the fact that it is a MAJOR security breach of our country) talk to a taxpayer in Arizona...health care budgets and law enforcement budgets are blown out of the water consistently year after year by the illegals..and yes, that is what they are, illegals. My friends from Ireland cant come and stay here for more than their visas allow them without risking being permanently barred from reentry for the rest of their lives( and they are documented) however our neighbors to the south think it is their right to come on over.
Do they provide an outlet of hard workers for employers who otherwise have a hard time filling low paying positions? yea...they do..but, take into account that it is estimated that $40 billion dollars of that income is sent back to Mexico annually it is easy to dismiss the economic benefit of the migrant workers and easier to see why the Mexican Government is all for illegal border crossings, it props up their
economy and allows their government to continue to be corrupt.
My suggestion? Build the wall before we have to look back with 20/20 vision at how dumb and naive we were being by thinking this security issue wasn't going to bite us in a big way. Mark my words, we will regret it if we do not stop this immediately.
oops, almost forgot, this is a local issue, not local to the city of Winona but certainly to the county( St. Charles) and certainly southern Mn.
