Subject: [Winona] high school design plans

Hello all,
This WOD string just popped up in my email box so I appologize for "jumping in".
I noticed Mr. Carlsons post and have a couple questions for you that maybe you could ask your father( please dont take this as a shot accross the bow, I mean no animosity towards him)).
First, the property owners are getting an additional "safety assesment" on their properties to pay for a sprinkler system that was "overlooked" in the design of the offices. How was this sprinkler system overlooked ? Certainly anyone designing a public building or an addition to a public building would be aware of state and federal firecodes and the requirement of a sprinkler system in them.
Was the real cost of the project watered down in order to make it an easier sell to the taxpayers? If in fact this was an honest oversight ( to the tune of, I believe $480k) were your architect fees paid in full? My thinking is that if in fact you did make a $480k design flaw in the project that your fees should have been cut?
Again, this is by no means an attack on the Architect, if a mistake was made, I am fine with that, I am however curious if this was another, in a long list, of the school board misleading and misrepresenting an expenditure.
Personally, the "safety assesment" is a complete insult to me and I am very leary of the intentions of the school board. If they wanted us to pay for a $2,000,000 office project, they should be forthright and sell it to us as such. Furthermore, I have to believe that for $2,000,000 I could build an office, which would meet building code, off of the WSHS campus and without stealing valuable space ffrom the students.
once again, I am afraid we have been hoodwinked by the board. Please tell me I am wrong.
