[Winona Online Democracy]
Forum members,
I, for one, am rather disappointed in all of these negative postings
regarding the Shakespeare festival, particularly the insults thrown at both the
actors and organizers. Whether or not you are a "Shakespeare
fan" (I'm not - most of his plays put me to sleep and I have trouble following
the language), this shows a degree of mean-spiritedness which detracts from the
entire public dialogue.
That said, I'm going to buck the obvious tide here. I think that
supporting the Shakespeare Festival is an excellent use of public (i.e. tax)
money. It makes Winona a better place to live and I am more than willing
to have my taxes go that way. We all have things which we disagree with
which are publicly supported, but we have an obligation to take the broader
view of the welfare of our community (that's "Good Citizenship 101").
