Two states say 'no' to dumping the Electoral College
, Associated Press

BISMARCK, N.D. — The election from seven years ago, during which George W. Bush became president even as Democrat Al Gore won the popular vote, left many Americans calling for an end to the Electoral College. They said the president should be picked strictly by the number of votes the candidate gets.

A move to make that happen has been defeated in North Dakota and Montana.

Under the present system, voters pick a slate of electors who then pick the president. And supporters of the Electoral College system say if the popular vote determined the winner, presiden! tial elections would be controlled by voters in large cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston.

The vote against getting rid of the current system was 60-to-31 in the North Dakota House and 30-to-20 in the Montana Senate.

National Popular Vote supporters say they have legislative sponsors in 46 states, and have introduced legislation in 22.

The Colorado Senate approved such a bill last month. California lawmakers did so last year, but Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed it.
