[Winona Online Democracy]

Today's Winona Daily News tells the story of yet another kid in our community,
"threatening to bring a gun to school and kill other students." Lest we think
the problem of violence is restricted to men and boys, the student cited is a
NINE YEAR OLD GIRL.

What are the roots of these violent behaviors? Given the prevalence of violent
imagery in our culture, is there any way Winona as a community can chart a
different course?

A group of citizens has been working for more than 2 years to understand more
about violence in the Winona Community. Now, they are inviting everyone to a
free community forum on the subject this coming Monday, February 26th, 7-9pm at
St. Mary's Page Theatre. Forum 197, a conversation about violence in our
community, was so named because of the 197 arrests in Winona during 2005 for
assault, and is sponsored by the Winona Daily News and HBC.

Panelists will include host Mary Wilder, Frank Pomeroy, Winona Police Chief,
Eryn Redig, Women's Resource Center, and Darrell Ehrlick, Diana Miller, Scott
Olson, John Ruggeberg, Katy Smith, and Dwayne Voegeli.

If you care about kids, and are concerned about violence among men or women,
you will appreciate this opportunity to explore solutions with a thoughtful and
informed panel.
