[Winona Online Democracy]
The first time I visited Winona as a child, I toured the Wilkie. I remember it
well because my cousin (pulling my leg I assume) said this is where Evil Knievel
jumped the river.
Then having moved to Winona in 1979, I recall the levee work, the fire, the
rebuilding, and so on. Ah, the good old days with the "Boat that Don't Float."
I have a hard time imagining Winona without the Wilkie. More dramatically, I
can't imagine Winona without a Wilkie controversy.
So what is the scoop? What in-depth information can you share? What would go in
its place?
My sense is that the four legs of Winona's identity might be down to one - no
more Hot Fish Shop, no more water tower, no more Wilkie(?), so what's left Sugar
Loaf. Anyone know where you can get a quarry permit? :-)
