Unless you are in agriculture not many taxpayers are aware of what Green
Acres status means.
It means that agricultural land is taxed at a lower rate than non-ag land.
Thanks to our House and Senate we are in danger of our Green Acres status
being removed. In fact as of right now it is removed.
No farmer that I know of is able to pay full property taxes on their land and
still continue farming. We don't farm for the money; we farm because we love
the land.
I have emailed every senator in St. Paul and have received only 3 replies.
As for the House I have received 2 replies. Pretty sad. Are they hiding? Am I
the only one writing in the entire state? I doubt it.
How this ever got passed is yet to be explained to me. Some are telling me it
is the DFL's fault. I thought the F in DFL stood for "farmer"? Guess not
anymore.
Please write/email/call your senator and representive. We need our Green
Acres back.
I realize wealthy people have misused this tax cut when buying woodland for
recreational use. If one can prove on their income taxes that a majority of
their income is from farming they should be able to retain their Green Acres
property tax status.
This will cause more farmers to sell their pasture land if it continues.
