Or, to be more correct, for compatibility with:
*BSD, Mac OS X, maybe AIX, and maybe really recent versions of
Solaris with BPF (although not all of them support PCAP_D_OUT);
Linux network capturing (except on kernels without PF_PACKET socket
support);
Linux Bluetooth capturing;
Linux USB capturing;
at least with current top-of-Git-tree libpcap.
On all other UN*X platforms...
