Yep, gigabit is actually 4 x 250 full duplex pairs at the phy.
So no TX or RX there, just a bunch of paralel 250Mb links.

Is that a standard for gigabit that it doesn't support half duplex? I
just checked and my BCM5709 doesn't show any supported half-duplex modes
at all for 1Gb, 2.5Gb, or 10Gb.

AFAIK, there is no such thing as half duplex gigabit.
There's only one mode in gigabit link, and it is full duplex.
