Depending on what you mean by "pcap API", you might not have to drop the pcap API to get that handle - "pcap_getevent()" should do that for you. (It's Win32-specific, so it's not part of the *portable* pcap API, but if the application is Windows-only, or if it can use different code paths there for Windows and UN*X, that's OK.)
