No, it does not revert the whole AP to 'b' mode, but essentially the airwaves need to run in 'compatibility mode', so to speak, so that the b clients can figure out when to talk between the g clients. This cuts speeds down from 22-24 Mbps in a pure g environment, to about 8 Mbps, in a mixed b/g environment.
