If you have access to a Linux laptop with either a Cisco Aironet or Proxim Orinoco Classic card, you can run Kismet. This is a very useful tool. It will sniff all frames going through the air (not just the beacons) and pull any and all information about the networks it can, including SSIDs, broadcast or not, network type (Infrastructure vs Ad-Hoc), and IP address ranges used on the network. The layer 3 information can only be found, though, if WEP is not used on that network.
