Alan McCord, Interim Executive Director of Academic Program Administration,
Lawrence Technological University, and I (Northeastern University) are
gathering information on the Nomadic User for the Educause Emerging
Technologies Committee. The result will be a white paper. Please take a
few minutes to assist us in our research. We will send a copy of the
report to everyone who replies. Thanks in advance.
"Nomadic end-users are pitching and striking their tents on our
campuses and are bringing with them a variety of technologies:
multifunction
cellphones, personal wireless networks, VOIP solutions, digital
video capture and editing,
personal storage, and their need to remotely access software
and services.
"Are we risking our IT future by ignoring or actively opposing
these trends while
continuing to build - or overbuild - and protect our
hard-wired, place-bound infrastructures?
"We are preparing a presentation for Educause' Emerging
Technology Committee
and would like to know how the nomadic, mobile future will
impact your campus IT
infrastructure. Specifically:
1. What nomadic/mobile technologies have impacted your
infrastructure already
and how?
2. How are you changing near-term plans for infrastructure
upgrades given the
trend toward mobile technologies?
3. What do you see as the future of networks on campuses given
the movement
toward mobile technologies?
4. How are you funding these changes to your infrastructure?
In addition to providing your observations and opinions in
response to this message,
please let us know if you have time to have us contact you for
a 1/2 hour phone
interview. Thanks in advance for your help!
