I've been doing extensive testing of PEAP with the XP client and with
Mac OS X 10.4. Our access points are mostly Proxim 600s with some HP
420s.

Once connected it works great and will stay connected.

However, getting connected is wildly inconsistent. On the mac I may
have to hit "connect" one to ten times. Sometimes it says connected, but
isn't.

On XP I get it working with one access point, but when I try to roam it
usually fails. Eventually both Mac and XP will connect, but I'm not
sure what's going on when it is failing. In both cases I get no log
entries on the IAS server.

I've tried 5-10 types of XP laptops. Only one, brand-new unit was WPA-2
ready without applying the "optional" patch. Units from last summer
needed the patch. Units 2 yrs old required firmware updates from the
vendor.

Since I'm forced to have a non-broadcast SSID (I can only broadcast one
and I want to keep the old vpn-protected system in place) I've found I
also had to download separate configuration software which is different
for different models of laptops.

All in all, I don't see this as being ready for primetime for thousands
of users, and yet I know many of you are using this now.

Perhaps my problem is either older access points or the non-broadcast
SSID. We will be doing a forklift to a new system starting next year,
but I was hoping to have 802.1x on the current system before the
changeout is complete.

Sigh.
