Thanks for the reply, just a quick question.. You say "after the user is authenticated, they are put in a different VLAN y". Is this done by the wireless controller?
I see your email is arubanetworks.com, so I'm assuming that's how it works with the aruba gear. Is it possible to do this using Trapeze yet? I've experimented with some vendors dynamic VLAN assignment after captive portal authentication and this is what I saw: When a user joins the SSID, they are placed in VLAN x so they can get assigned their IP info. The user resolves a web site and attempts to surf to port 80 or 443. At this point, they are redirected to the captive portal function which authenticates the user. After the user is authenticated, they are put in a different VLAN y. The user needs to re-dhcp and the initial DHCP lease on VLAN x is 10 seconds so the client should get the new IP address scheme for VLAN y within 20 seconds. I guess the other option is to do NAT for any source IP but this has more CPU overhead. Seems like there would be problems with a low lease time for some clients. (?) Hi Matt, When you're talking about the "web portal" -- are you talking about the web GUI configuration utility in the Trapeze switch? Or the web portal feature they support for guest access? -Charles ------------------------------------------- WiNOG Wireless Roadshows Coming to a City Near You http://www.winog.com -----Original Message----- From: Matt Ashfield [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, October 24, 2006 9:18 AM To: WIRELESS-LAN@LISTSERV.EDUCAUSE.EDU Subject: [WIRELESS-LAN] anyone using trapeze? Hi All I'm just wondering if anyone on this list is using Trapeze. If so, I'm curious about a particular feature. Namely, I'm wondering if you can do dynamic vlan assignment via the web portal that is provided in the Trapeze security switches. We actually have Nortel gear (which is basically Trapeze) and I'm wondering if that feature is available in Trapeze in hopes that Nortel will soon be offering it.
