Just to revive a thread that I couldn't answer at the time because we
hadn't publicly launched:

You might be interested by the newly-announced OpenSEA Alliance (SEA =
Secure Edge Access), an industry group initially focused on doing for
the free supplicant market what Firefox has done for browsers - i.e.
deliver full functionality in an attractive usable package, and possibly
drive further innovation from the other players in the 802.1X space.

UKERNA (which I guess you could call the UK equivalent of Internet2,
delivering the JANET education and research network) is a founding
member, so we will be pushing hard for all the education-relevant
features that have been mentioned here: preconfigurability and easy
roll-out, broad platform support including mobile form factors etc.

The initial code release is based upon Xsupplicant, and we think over
the next few months will be a viable alternative.
