At Indiana University we early on created a wireless network that required
VPN to get off the wireless network. There were a few exceptions: the
knowledge-base, IUWare (software download), Get Connected (required to run
prior to connection in the dorms), and a few others.

Recently we have allowed devices with registered MAC address unfettered
internet access (minus port 25) and in two weeks will allow them a list of 7
encrypted protocols towards campus. We are at the same time removing the
exceptions, pushing them to HTTPS. This has been controversial internally
as there will be added confusion by laptop users, but we felt it was
necessary to allow handhelds to work in our environment.

We have an RFP on the street for a next-generation wireless system and when
installed we plan to advertise two SSIDs, one with the legacy wireless
network described above, and a new one using 802.1x.
