Supporting B clients means that the management messages -- SSID beacon broadcasts, time slice assignments, etc -- have to be sent at B data rates. Different manufacturers rate the impact of this as anywhere from "slight" to "serious". One has to wonder if those who rate it the latter haven't perhaps, at some time (hopefully no longer in current shipping products) held ALL traffic to B rates in that scenario. If client and base station are both talking G, and RTS/CTS is enforced (always a good idea), there's no reason that data cannot flow at G rates during that client's time slices. And in any sane deployment, data transmission should account for the majority of the airtime by a huge margin.
