The Access Point has to have something to get the Username from.

When you say it gets the username from a WPA connection, I'm assuming you
mean WPA Enterprise.

WEP, No encryption, WPA-PSK, and WPA2-PSK do not use usernames, so the
Access point does not have access to them.
