Hi Mike,

That SSID does not have any special firewall policies on it. A student could
spoof their MAC or register their laptop and say it was something else if they
wanted to. We don't really care, because a lot of these devices can browse the
web and do tons of things online too. For example, a student could install
Linux on their Playstation 3 and be connected to this SSID and we aren't really
going to notice. Our WPA2 Enterprise SSID is pretty easy to connect to and we
help students with that process, so I don't know of anyone trying to connect to
the devices SSID.

The majority of our dorms are wireless-only, which led us to take this
approach. We are very strong advocates of the notion that the dorms are "home"
for our students, so we want them to do be able to do things like play games
here. I can't imagine the reaction we would get if students couldn't play on
Xbox Live in the dorms. There are over 200 Xbox 360s alone... :)

Take care,

Hi Matt,

Curious, does your "gaming" SSID have any (role based) firewall policies
to ensure that laptops don't migrate to this SSID, or do you not care if
they do?

We'll be facing the same challenge. We have a gaming-unfriendly 802.1x
SSID (WPA/TTLS/PAP/AES) and a captive portal SSID that we're hoping to
make go away, not grow. We'll also soon have many wireless-only dorms so
telling gamers to plug in is not an option.
