Back to fundamentals... I can't find much of technical specifics on the Coachcomm Tempest NG beyond that they use frequency hopping in 2.4 GHz and are not impacted by other nearby wireless devices, by their claims. That is not to say they are claiming to not interfere WITH other things (that I can see from available sales fodder) in this unlicensed space.
2.4 GHz is only so big, and any modern WiFi deployment of any size will use all three non-overlaps, so FHSS overlaid on the whole spectrum arguably HAS to have some impact. They claim proprietary FHSS methods, so it's hard to tell what they are really doing without signals analysis but that they interfere is not surprising. I always wonder why products like this don't leverage 900 MHz, 1.9 GHz or other space that is just not used by WLANs at all. We occasionally get asked by some vendor to "just give us a channel in 2.4 GHz that your WLAN doesn't use", and it's hard not let loose with mad, cackling laughter. -Lee Badman ________________________________ From: The EDUCAUSE Wireless Issues Constituent Group Listserv [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Rob Brenner Sent: Wednesday, November 17, 2010 9:55 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Coachcomm system... We've run into a similar issue. I'm not sure what brand of headsets are used by our coaches, but they stomp on ch11. We basically punted and have alternated between channels 1 and 6 in several of our b/g locations. It isn't our preferred solution, but it's working for us.
