We are looking at how we install wireless in our Residence Halls for coverage. Currently we only place access points in the hallways, but are looking at moving them into the rooms for better coverage. We were wondering if anyone else has put the access points in the rooms and if they have seen a reduction in wireless complaint or if there have been issues with students playing with or disconnecting the access points.
We are largely in hallways, but it's not ideal. The corridors really impede signal transmission into rooms.
In 5 of our 7 suite-style buildings, we moved the APs into the suite lounges. Many were indeed unplugged because the xbox was more important. We ended up putting cable locks on the wires. Pain in the butt. No level of explanation could convince the boys (it was always boys) that unplugging the AP had a broader impact than just their suite.
People are much happier with coverage in those rooms, though, with transmitters inside the suites.
Most of the res halls here are concrete block and slab construction from the 60s. They may as well have built Faraday cages for dorm rooms.
