There are a few: Miracast, Wi Di, Wifi Direct all come to mind.
It's betamax vs vhs or hd-dvd vs blu-ray all over again, and it's even more complicated because using any of those with an Apple product just won't happen. I suspect hell will freeze over before Apple supports any of them for mirroring iPads, and that seems to be what's driving this.
