We are going to go the same route. After a lot of testing, none of the workarounds are feasible/manageable.
For the group: Do you all have a page or FAQ detailing why you don't support Chromecast? If so, do you have a link advising students to send google feedback to support 802.1x or at least routed networks? We are in the process of doing this and I imagine the more people that ask for the feature, the more likely it will be implemented.
