I set one of these systems up in the last hospital I worked at, The system we used was a tag based system for tracking equipment and it used a mixture of AP location and choke points. The ap location was good enough to give us a reasonable location accuracy in the ward areas +/-3 meters, the choke points were used in store rooms. we placed an exciter on each side of the door so direction of travel could be determined and this would say if the device was in the store room or not.
The checkpoint system was put in afterwards as we found that the 2-3 meters found with the ap only system could mean the kit appeared in neighbouring store rooms, This lead to staff still going through lots of rooms to find what they wanted, which wasn't helpful. If I was to set up a system again i would use both systems rather than try and manage to get 'spitting distance' accuracy with just AP's alone. I used a Cisco wireless network and MSE with the aero-scout location tracking software and tags, I set the system up about 5 years ago.. Hope that's of some use.
