Debian 7 is about to go end of life. So start with Debian 8
jessie.

FreeRADIUS in Debian is hideously out of date. Even in jessie it's
versin 2.2 which is end-of-life.

But building your own Debian packages is straightforward - see
http://wiki.freeradius.org/building/Build#building-packages_building-debian-packages

Use the latest version 3.0 FreeRADIUS (3.0.11 as of right now). Or
the 3.0.x branch if you want the latest bugfixes (3.0.x is
bugfixes to stable, 3.1.x is development, so stay away unless you
know what you're doing).

We run FreeRADIUS (2.x, 3.0 and 3.1) on Debian (wheezy and
jessie), so you're not alone!
