Hi Sean,

I meant to respond to your much earlier. I’ve been meaning to look into a
Chromebook myself for testing since they’re quite popular amongst some of our
student population.

A quick point I wanted to make out was in a pinch, I used Neverware CloudReady
(Chromium OS) Virtual Machine -
https://helpdeskgeek.com/virtualization/how-to-install-chrome-os-in-vmware/ –
that has been nice for base troubleshooting/GUI assistance. It is limited
though – so I’d say it’s good for a “workflow experience”.

Limitations

  * I used this for testing the workflow of SecureW2 Onboarding – and
although I was able to complete the enrollment and receive a user certificate –
the certificate was greyed out to lacking a TPM hardware chip (which makes
sense). Still very useful in workflow testing.
  * No access to the Android Playstore – not that big of a deal. Although
interestingly I found a couple students attempting to use the “Android SecureW2
App” on their ChromeBooks. 😝 – so that’s one workflow I hadn’t quite expected.

I then found a co-worker that had an Asus Chromebox CN60 -
https://www.asus.com/Chrome-Devices/Chromebox/ProductPrint/ - that’s several
years old – but helped me finish my SecureW2 testing. It’s no longer receiving
updates though – and it’s a co-workers personal one – so I’ll probably be
looking at purchasing one in the future as well.

Subject: [WIRELESS-LAN] Chromebook Suggestions

Hi wi-fi peeps!

Our ITS department is looking to buy a Chromebook, and I’ve been asked to look
into whether there are better ones for testing wi-fi. So before I start
trawling the web, I though I’d throw it out to the forum and see what
experiences you folks have had with Chromebooks, and if you would recommend any
to use for a quick and easy wi-fi troubleshooting tool for our 1st line group.
From a high level this will essentially be used as a means of comparison when
students bring in their device, so they can help to narrow down the cause of
the issue, before potentially escalating to me. Also it would be beneficial if
it could host some kind of app that gave them a simple (perhaps graphical)
interface showing audible WLANs & RSSI.

I realize that one way to look at this is to try and identify the most commonly
used Chromebook by our students, so we can truly mirror their experience. So
this is something that is being taken into consideration.

Thanks

Sean
