I've done what you propose (though i didn't need all the extra hardware 
since
i'm only going a couple hundred meters.

It is possible with wap11s  (though you would provide wireless coverage 
for clients on both sides of the bridge).
But since you're already spending some money maybe you are willing to 
purchase better hardware...

I've had success with agere RG-1000s, intel 2011s (which have symbol 
 innards i think)
