The only completely secure computer has no network connections and no input
or output devices,Not very useful! Every connection or device has some level
of vulnerability these degradations of security however small seem additive,
If what you are doing is so important , the convenience of Wireless may not
be worth the exposure.
I would not compromise the security of my network for the ability to sit in
the back yard and play online computer games. (well at the moment I am
relying upon the network software to restrict access to shared resources,
One could eavesdrop and pickup packets as they pass acros the network but
browsing files on shares would be more difficult.

Anyone notice the RJ45 jacks in the parking lots and on the outside of most
Wal Marts? The ones they plug the cash register into for the Yard sales?
I wonder if they are live? Perhaps a Wap there would be an interesting
community resource?

Subject: [BAWUG] securing WAP

I just picked up a WAP-11 which is attached to a switch that's attached
to our LAN. This has the effect of by-passing the firewall I've setup.
I use a D-Link DWL-650 pcmcia card, and i've heard of incompatibilites
between the non-linksys products and the v2.2 of the WAP11, so I've not
enabled WEP. I've set it so only my laptop's MAC will be able to
connect. However, two problems exist :

        - Someone can spoof the MAC and get onto the network
        - People can eavesdrop on the connection

So far, it seems as if a PPTP tunnel might be the best solution -- but
(correct me if I'm wrong) I'll need to add another nic to the
firewall/router/gateway box (linux), and directly connect the WAP11 to the
linux box...

If this isn't the best solution, I'd love to hear some suggestions.

thanks,
Reza
