Dear Mr. Greathouse: Actually, most carriers have now realized that WLAN's are complementary to their expensive but slow networks, and in fact will save them a lot of money that would otherwise have to be spent on 3G infrastructure buildouts. Voicestream bought TMobile for this reason. Nokia is one of the leaders in this area, having demonstrated SIM-card-based WLAN access a couple of years ago and supporting the commercialization efforts of some European and American companies to provide the software side of transparent roaming.
