I use a Cisco Aironet to connect to my Airport Base. Although I use a Mac, the technology is Wi-Fi and not OS-specific.
You may need to talk with the person who configured the Airport Base Station (ABS) to see if they activated any access restrictions. The ABS requires the SSID name from the client only if the ABS is configured to operate as a "closed system" -- not broadcasting the SSID. In that case, the ABS requires the SSID and may also be configured to allow clients by MAC address. The fact that it is an older ABS means little if it has been upgraded with the latest v. 2.0.2 Airport software, which has the latest access restriction options. WEP is another matter. I'd say use WEP off at first, unless necessary. Apple Airport uses its own proprietary WEP encryption that is different from most other makers, requiring you to put a "$" as the first character in the WEP hexidecimal key you input on the Intel card to alert the Airport base to not employ Apple's encryption scheme. It will work if you do that. I have WEP 128 enabled, whatever that's worth.
