I just read Annallee Newitz' article in the sfbg. I''m interested in trying to connect my desktop pc to the internet with an antenna. I am not at all knowledgeable about wireless technology or networking - but would love to learn if I can make this work.
Can someone tell me if there's a hotspot I can reach from my house on Central and Fell? Both of the close nodes I checked: Divis./California and Cole/Waller (Feedle) are no longer in operation as far as I can tell.
Here is what I envision. Please tell me if it's possible:
-Get a wireless card for my 2yo compaq desktop.
-build/buy an antenna
-connect with an "opennap" and access the internet that way.
My main question is whether or not I am within range of a "hotspot" at my house. Anyone have any firsthand experience in the panhandle area?
