I have recently been setting up a Liksys WAP 11 for a 7km link here in
South Australia. Suffice to say things are working, but the link is
very low quality and we dont know why.

FreeBSD is being used on both of the client nodes, which are each
about 7km from the access point. The output from 'dstumbler' is similar
for both, showing a higher than usual noise level in the signal:

015:062:047 -------------++++
009:060:051 --------------++
010:060:050 --------------++
011:061:050 --------------+++

Compare this with an example of an ideal 'good quality' link:

087:114:027 -----+++++++++++++++++++
090:117:027 -----++++++++++++++++++++
090:117:027 -----++++++++++++++++++++
090:117:027 -----++++++++++++++++++++

Now for the confusing part:

The noise level (~50) is still evident even with the WAP 11 right
next to the client card!! Orinoco silvers are being used for clients at
the moment. Thats what I can't understand, even with no external (3rd
party) antennae, and with all the gear set up inside, this noise level
is present in dstumbler.

Where the hell could it be coming from ?

This seems to be seriously affecting our link, as I have never
experienced more than 1mbps at any time since we set it up. The
fastest transfers I have ever seen were around 100k/sec but this
quickly deteriorated to the usual around 20k/sec.

Any thoughts/ideas on this would be great thanks.
