The REAL question that needs a good answer. ( I am not going to go into
TOTAL detail here ... I would just like some discussion on this topic )

How do we build wireless networks that get STRONGER with each additional
node?

some answers...

  1. I think the Cisco AP ( and some others orinico/ayaya???? ) does this
in a minimal way. I understand they functions as a repeaters. ( Good, but
has many limitations. Like requires either omni antenna on each node or it
is really just a point to point.
  2. Nokia advertises some proprietary thing that says it has SMART
routing.
  3. You can put two... say WAP11 at each connection...one with the
directional link antenna and one omni to extend the network to others. Same
limitations as #1 and almost costs as much... multiple access points and
antenna setups required. (management nightmare...and I am not really
trusting this setup)
  4. ???? Somebody add some ways here!

Is there another solution to this that meets these requirements.

1. One AP or Basic Machine/Linux with one decent wireless card with external
antenna
2. One antenna that has directional and omni capability
3. Some software that does some smart stuff... like sensing signal levels
and routing traffic to the best signal.
4. Also, manages bandwidth... if for instance an AP has multiple routes to
the net.
5. also, ( I can add about 100 features I would want to see in this SW )
6. more...
