gdm is the Gnome Display Manager; like kdm and xdm, it manages the
login box on your X server, run from inittab, and lets you have a
graphical login.

I'm not sure precisely what the slave_xioerror_handler does, but if
it's been working up to now, I'd bet you either reconfigured something
or had a piece of hardware start to die...
