Try a google search on 'cringely passive site:lists.bawug.org', and also http://www.telexwireless.com/wlanfaq.htm (about halfway down, search for 'passive'). Upshot is: you'll probably need high power at both ends, large antennas in the middle, in order to cover even a fairly short distance.
