Notwithstanding DSTM,Wardriving, as I understand it, is an adaptation of the
term "wardialing"
(http://63.251.138.38/atstake/acrobat/wardialing_brief.pdf) the practice of
modem-directed range or sequential dialing to discover computer access
numbers.

Otherwise, the etymology and origin of "wardriving" is unknown to me.

What's with all this "war" business? I understand how
ISPs might prefer to view the spread of this type of
information this way, and how the media would be all
too happy to cash in on and help us pick a fight with
ISPs, but it sure obscures the value, intent, and
grass-roots cooperative nature of the community
networking movement, or at least a good part of it.
