Greetings fellow bay area wireless types! This is a little spammy,
and for that I'm sorry, but many of you run .org domains and may
care.

Some of you may know that I work for the Internet Software
Consortium. We're the people who write BIND 8 and BIND 9, INN, and
other open source software in wide use today.

We have put in a bid to run the .org TLD, and we need your show of
support. We've partnered with Internet Multicasting Service
(http://not.invisible.net/). I'm writing to you today because I think
this is a really important test of whether or not some core Internet
infrastructure will be public or private.

We see .org as a public trust. That means that we'll run a fully
open and transparent registry: all of our software for running the
registry will be published open source and will be available for
anybody else to use. We'll also publish full statistics about what
we're doing and run a transparent operation. We view this as an
opportunity to produce a "best current practices" reference
implementation and take some of the .com MIS-style mystique out
of the so-called "domain name industry."

The other important thing about what we're proposing is how we'll
use the funds: every cent will be plowed back into core Internet
infrastructure, such as developing BIND 9 and doing things like
securing the DNS.

I'm writing to you because our fully open approach is a long-shot
and we need public support. The other bidders for this opportunity
are all combinations of a well-meaning non-profit teamed up with
a commercial registry operator. We don't think .org should be
run to produce shareholder profits and we don't think the funds
from .org should be spent on well-meaning general good works.

Your public support would really help our chances of winning this
if you think we're the right people for the job.
