I bought a Hawking WR254S at Fry's for $99 (after $15 rebate) and found it pretty similar in setup to the SMC Barricade non-wireless router software. The Hawking router, though has NAT port range mapping instead of public/private port mapping. I.e., it appears to map WAN ports xxx-yyy to LAN ports xxx-yyy at a specified LAN IP address. The SMC router (and others) let you map WAN port xxx to LAN port yyy at a specified LAN IP address. In other words, you can have multiple ssh servers appear publicly with the SMC, but not with the Hawking, because it always maps port 22 to port 22.
I sent the Hawking folks a query and they sent back new firmware, but the result was exactly the same, except the firmware version number changed (so I know the update worked). Anybody had luck using other brands of firmware on these devices? (Just thought maybe they're all rebranded OEM boxes). http://www.hawkingtech.com/products/wr254s.htm -- general wireless list, a bawug thing <http://www.bawug.org/> [un]subscribe: http://lists.bawug.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless
