You can get 802.1x security via clients, not just hardware (cisco
actually does the pcmcia/pci cards via software)

Depending which OS, some are free some aren't... might still work out
cheaper then the hardware route... *shrug*

www.freeradius.org - radius server able to support eap-tls (aka leap)

related...
