Subject: [BAWUG] Wireless in Tahoe

Hey all

I was wondering if any of the bay area folks have had experience with 802.11b networks
in the Lake Tahoe area. I moving up there for the season and as it stands, theres not
DSL/Cable available in my area (just outside Tahoe City). After further
investigation, it seems that most of the tahoe area (Truckee and Incline aside) don't
have any broadband services and I cant find any open networks in the region. There is
one company ( http://tahoe.ltol.com ) thats offering wireless services in the Tahoe
area, although its only really visible from Truckee and its quite expensive.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of any other wireless providers/open networks in the
Tahoe area. Otherwise, I'm considering setting one up (maybe free/community) in
Incline Village so that all the shoreside people have access. I imagine there'll be a
few big hurdles (snow, evaporation, and freezing temperatures) but otherwise this
would probably be doable.

Any insights (i.e is it possible to do in the cold/snowy conditions with evaporation
coming off the lake)? The alternative is a 'starband' type services with 1sec+
latency which isnt so fun for ssh.
