Guy, Yes, the GPS receiver only receives, but it like any receiver generates a small RF field as it does so. You're right that it would need a much bigger battery and somewhat bigger antenna (I'm hung up on reference to the Globalstar LEO/cell phone... not a gigantic antenna for decent two-way satellite comms!)
