I am doing part of my thesis on what
ubiquitous wireless networks will be like in the future. When GPS was
first conceived, it was never thought to redefine transportation and navigation
all over the world. But when the network was in place, others built upon
it and that caused a revolution. I see the same future for wireless
internet. I was wondering what many of you, who are helping define what
the future holds, feel about the future:
Is it more optimal for the wireless internet of the
future to be provided by different providers like cell phone
plans or for it to be a basic utility like power or water, and
will this ultimately happen?
As different application uses come out for wireless
internet like a service in your car that reads traffic reports and offers
"smart" directions to skip traffic, is it possible that internet service like
this could be provided for free (like GPS) and regular internet be a pay
service.
Would a
public wireless internet be designed to provide coverage into the home or
to bring it to the home, where the house would pick up the signal and then
broadcast within itself.
In this future, what will the security be
like? Even today we all know most of us could get hacked if enough
resources were invested, but its not that great of an issue because its not
really worth it to anyone to do
that. Will wireless internet just end up being the
same as what a regular dial up or DSL account is?
If anyone knows any different resources (books,
websites, etc.) that could aid me on my research, I would gladly accept any
recommendations.
