I too have had good experiences with the Anritsu SiteMaster. It's only useful for 802.11b however since it doesn't cover the 5-GHz bands.
At the WCAi conference in San Jose earlier this month, I came across some low-cost portable spectrum analyzers from XL Microwave that look interesting. See www.xlmicrowave.com for details.
