Hello,

Here's the story:

I borrowed a Wlink WEN-2021 AP to test the availability of wireless
networks in my area - i installed the SNMP and USB tools, the correct
USB driver and was able to connect to the AP but only in a read only
mode... i guess the owner must have changed the write password and
forgot to tell me (he doesen't know yet that his AP died =) and since
i was unable to reach him i started meddling with the software ... i
was thinking if there is a way to reset the AP to the factory
settings... i noticed there is an TFTP upgrade program and decided to
try if it's going to connect to the AP - i fired the application up
and when it asked me for a file to upload i (not having a real
firmware) selected windows' boot.ini =))) much to my dismay it said
'upload in progress' (or something like that) and the next thing i
noticed was the WLAN light on the AP stopped blinking ... really i was
not expecting it to flash it with a clearly bogus code and not being
supplied a correct password... few moments later it occured to me that
TFTP did not require authentification =) but still if i designed the
kit i wouldn't make it this way ;)

so now i have a dead AP and tommorow i'll have one very angry friend,
and probably i'll also have my reproductive organs removed too =)) j/k

the AP does not respond to the IP anymore and i cannot connect thru
the USB interface - it's being recognized as an unknown usb device...

i emailed WLINK support, but i don't expect much help... i don't
expect much help from you too =) i noticed a similar post from few
days ago...

anyway - i dismantled the AP and found it uses the ATMEL AT76C510
which is "Ethernet to Wireless Brigde-on-a-chip" =) no more info
available :(

the memory chip is AT29LV020 - it has two blocks that can be write protected
- presumably to store a boot code which cannot be destroyed by a
corrupt firmware ... i don't put much hope into WLINK designing their
gear foolproof - i don't think there is an easy way to fix the kit,
but if any of you have any idea i'd be glad to hear it...

the onyl think i can think of is getting a working WEN-2021, reading
the contents of the 29020 and writing them to the non-working one...
that invovles some fine soldering (which i - being nervous kind of
person - cannot do ;) ... it also requries a possession of a
reader/writer for that memory chip - unfortunately it's not Serial
EEprom :) ah yes - if i do that i'll end up with two AP's having the
same MAC address - great for taking down the network probably, but of
no use if i want to make a link between them ;)

Thats it =) Thanks for reading my rant :P
