So why doesn't Stanford have open public access points for the public?
It seems that it wouldn't be too hard to offer access via a dmz...

That way visiting scholars and the public could have access on campus
which can only be a good thing. Services and their internal networks
could still be gated...

I was there yesterday at Tresidor visiting the PeaceMaker's art exhibit 
(which is exceptional by the way and just what we need during these times 
of uncertainty) and was disappointed that I could not access the Internet
via wireless 802.11b. 

It seems that universities of all places, would want to help provide
access as they are a place of promoting learning and sharing. 

Thank goodness for public libraries... at least they offer free
access to all.
