I got one more question:
those of you playing with the 54G stuff from linksys: any reports on
backward compatability? Anyone try connecting a WAP11 in client mode?
anyone try this with the 54G 4 port port combo unit? I'm pretty sure they
won't/don't according to linksys support but I'm looking for a real world
...

Well, I don't know much about the WAP11, but I do have some experience with the Linksys WET11 bridges and the new 54G equipment. I had the following setup working twice last month as a test. Once with all the equipment in a big room for a few hours, and then for an hour or so in the field (a cave, actually, but that's a long story ;-). I was getting end to end connectivity through two 802.11b links on non-interfering channels 6 and 11.

I was able to get a throughput of 2 to 3 megabits per second on file transfers from the Toshiba to the Sony, when the web status screens were reporting both links at 11 megabit/sec, when the setup was all in one room, and 2 to 2.5 megabits per second in the field.

I was seeing occasional link dropouts in the field situation, which I suspect were due to receiver desensitization. From my brief test, I developed a suspicion that the 802.11g Linksys RF section is more susceptible to desensitization from supposedly non-interfering channels than the older 802.11b stuff. It's only a suspicion, though.
